Aiken County school district holds 3rd annual bicycle drive
AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - The Aiken County Public Schools Department of Student Services held its third annual Holiday Bicycle Drive.
The department went to elementary schools across Aiken County to surprise 160 students with brand-new bicycles.
The annual bicycle drive was initiated by Carl White, district director of student services, three years ago and has grown each year.
“Each bike brings a smile and a sense of pride as a child experiences the joy of owning something of their own,” said White.

The school system says the goal was to provide two or three bikes to each elementary school in the district. White says that every elementary school received at least three bikes and some schools were gifted as many as 17 bikes for students this year.
School counselors at each of the district’s 21 elementary schools collaborated with the Department of Student Services to determine the students who would receive bicycles this holiday season, according to the school system.
This year, the Department of Student Services received many donations from community , partner organizations, as well as Aiken County Public School District schools, faculty, and staff.
