AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - One local church is celebrating a couple of milestones this month.

Oasis VIP, located off Deans Bridge Road, has been around for 20 years and is reaching people from near and far through their radio station Oasis 97.3.

We sat down with the pastor who is finding solutions in connecting people during this time of recovery.

It’s a familiar voice you may have heard on the radio.

Pastor Angel Maestre started the first Spanish radio station in Augusta eight years ago.

Dana’s Recovery Room started inside the Immanuel Baptist Church in North Augusta. And now, a new recovery room has opened in its place to continue the mission.

“The radio station is reaching out to the whole community, the whole Augusta, the whole CSRA. We are working to see if we can reach a little more because the need is there,” said Maestre.

It’s something that has helped bring people together during the toughest times.

Maestre says the radio station played an important role during covid.

“For that time, we were able to bring science, doctors, people, information, locations to have the vaccine. So, it was a blessing for the community to have a radio station where they can have that information,” he said.

He’s now had guests on the radio providing information about where to go for help after Hurricane Helene.

“Now, in Helene, the need was greater. The radio station has been working in an amazing way when the need is there in our community and we are so blessed to be that bridge that brings hope and information to our audience,” said Maestre.

On Tuesday, we got a behind-the-scenes look at the Salvation Army of Aikne's Angel Tree operation where they’re finding solutions in providing gifts to more than 650 families.

Maestre has been recognized for his work throughout the CSRA, both nationally and internationally.

Last year, he was a recipient of the 50 Most Influential Latinos in Georgia — something his daughter has had the pleasure to watch.

Genesis Maestre, his daughter, said: “With that recognition, he’s able to do more and help our community more. Especially, as the Hispanic population continues to grow not only in the United States but mostly in Georgia. It has been truly amazing to help our community, but the rest of Augusta of course as well.”

Oasis 97.3 is live weekly from the church, Oasis VIP, which has been in Augusta now for the last 20 years.

“That’s the vision that I have is to help the community while we preach the gospel,” said Maestre.
