AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Georgia Power is preparing to raise rates yet again.

State utility regulators voted Wednesday to let the power company raise rates Jan. 1.

Rates are expected to go up by 3.5%.

Georgia Power says the money will be used to pay for grid improvements, investments in cleaner energy and customer service upgrades.

The utility started the ball rolling for this increase back in 2022, but it’s one of many in recent years.

With just days left until Christmas, FedEx customers say their packages are stuck at shipping centers instead of on delivery trucks.

When Plant Vogtle Unit 4 went online earlier this year, it sparked a 5% increase.

That followed an increase when Unit 3 went online.

And in summer 2023, there was an increase in response to higher fuel costs.

Looking ahead, the company could seek another rate hike to pay for damage from Hurricane Helene, the most destructive storm in company history.

When asked if the company is planning on asking to raise rates again, this time due to damage from Hurricane Helene, company leaders responded that they maintain a storm recovery , and that a portion of each customer’s bill is used to cover restoration costs after storms.
