EF-0 tornado confirmed in Fayette County after line of storms
ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - An EF-0 tornado touched down in Fayette County on Sunday morning during a line of intense storms, the National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed.
The funnel was east of Starrs Mill and southwest of Woolsey around Acton Drive in Fayetteville with estimated wind speeds of 80 mph. The NWS is also expected to conduct surveys in Coweta and Meriwether to see if any other tornadoes spawned.
At around 4 a.m., a tornado warning was put into effect for parts of Fayette, Coweta, Meriwether and Spalding counties.
The storm system swept in from the east, where it whipped up tornadoes from southeastern Texas to Alabama, killing two people and injuring six others.
Metro Atlanta saw several damaged homes and closed roads due to fallen trees.
The Enhanced Fujita (EF) Scale measures tornadoes based on their wind speeds. EF-0 is the lowest category, with wind speeds from 65 to 85 mph. The scale goes up to EF-5, where wind speeds reach more than 200 mph.
This is a developing story.
