What’s next for U.S., Carter family after ex-president’s death?
PLAINS, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - With Jimmy Carter’s ing comes some very specific presidential protocols. Here’s what the next few days will look like for the Carters and the nation.

How to share your condolences with Jimmy Carter’s family
The Carter Center is inviting the public to share their memories of the 39th U.S. president in an online condolence book.

It’s been more than five years since the nation last lost a former commander-in-chief. The next eight days will be busy as family and the nation mourn.
The family has three days to make their way down to the Carters’ hometown of Plains, Georgia. The next day, Carter’s body will be taken to Atlanta, making a couple of stops along the way from nearby Americus to his boyhood home in archery to the state capital.

And finally, the Carter Center, where he will lie in repose for two days. Then Carter’s body will be flown from Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Marietta to Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland after a brief arrival ceremony.
His body will be taken to the capitol building in D.C., where Hawaiians state for two more days. On the eighth day, his body will be flown back to the plains for a private service at Maranatha Church, where he taught Sunday school.
Carter will then be buried by his late wife, Rosalynn, who died last year. The two were married for 77 years and will be buried at the house they’ve lived in since 1960.
