Road closure announced near Jimmy Carter Presidential Library

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A major road near the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library will be closed as the public pays its respects to the former president.

East John Lewis Freedom Parkway NE is closed near the library in preparation for Carter’s state funeral.

Carter died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2024, at the age of 100. President Joe Biden ordered a state funeral for the nation’s 39th president only hours after the Carter Center announced his ing.

Carter will lie in repose at the center starting on Saturday, Jan. 4. There, the public will be able to pay their respects.

The state funeral will begin with a motorcade at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus, at 10:15 a.m. Saturday. The motorcade then travels through Carter’s hometown of Plains for a brief pause in front of his family’s farm at 10:50 a.m. During the pause, the National Park Service will ring the historic farm bell 39 times.

The Carter Center is preparing to welcome possibly thousands of people who want to say their last goodbyes and pay their final respects to the 39th president.

The motorcade to Atlanta resumes at 10:55 a.m. It will stop at Georgia’s State Capitol for a moment of silence at 3 p.m. Carter’s remains will then be transported to the Carter Presidential Center for an arrival ceremony at 3:45 p.m. and service at 4 p.m. Following the service, he will lie in repose for mourners to pay their respects beginning at 7 p.m.

Carter’s body will then leave the Carter Center on Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 9:30 a.m. It will then be brought to Washington, where he will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol. A funeral will be held at Washington National Cathedral on Thursday, Jan. 9 at 10 a.m.,

The road closure will end on Tuesday, Jan. 7 at noon.
