AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - On Tuesday in Aiken, neighbors provided input on the Fairfield Street Bridge replacement project.

Back in 2016, SCDOT announced the bridge’s closure after a routine inspection showed it was deteriorating.

Last Jan. the city council approved for the bridge to be replaced.

Tonight, people had a chance to look at design plans and the impacts the project has.

In Bamberg County, Sheriff Kenneth Bamberg took the Oath of Office on Tuesday.

“It helps connect our historic district to our downtown district and I think that’s important,” says Lex Kirkland, assistant city manager. “The bridge has been closed for some time. To some, it’s an eyesore and I tend to agree with them, so we would love to beautify that area to have a nice bridge that serves our citizens well.”

Kirkland says they will be reviewing from people over the next few days.
