Apalachee High School student arrested for bringing gun to school
BARROW, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — A student brought a gun to Apalachee High School on Wednesday, months after a deadly mass shooting on the campus, the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office said.
A 14-year-old student was arrested at the school around 2 p.m., according to the sheriff’s office. He has been charged with two counts of possession of a weapon on school grounds, theft by taking and minor in possession of a firearm.

Deputies said there were “no reports of the student threatening anyone with the gun” and said the boy was cooperative. He is being held at the Regional Youth Detention Center.
School officials said classes are canceled for Apalachee High students on Thursday because of the incident.
Isabel Trejo is a senior at Apalachee High. She was shocked to hear about the incident, as there wasn’t a lockdown on campus.
“It’s discouraging, it makes you feel angry,” Trejo said. “It makes you feel disappointed and it’s just scary.”

The final suspect wanted in the fatal shooting of a MARTA bus driver has been arrested after several days on the run, according to police.

On Sept. 4, two students and two teachers were killed and multiple others were injured in a mass shooting at the school.
The incident on Wednesday also comes after students, parents and teachers asked the Barrow County Board of Education for more security measures during a school board meeting Tuesday night.
Sean Shultz is a parent at Apalachee High. He says his 16-year-old son only found out about the incident after an email was sent to parents from the school district Wednesday afternoon.
“After I told him, he just went flush and his whole complexion went pale,” Shultz said. “My son called me a little while ago and said he doesn’t feel safe anywhere.”
Deputy injured, suspect killed in Atlanta neighborhood shootout
An off-duty Fulton County deputy was injured and an armed suspect was killed in a shootout in southwest Atlanta late Monday afternoon, according to the sheriff’s office.

Superintendent Dallas LeDuff said in a statement on the school district’s website that the school board has called a meeting for 4 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 9, “to discuss in Executive Session the immediate safety enhancement options for our schools.”
“We understand this brings up many different feelings in each of us,” LeDuff wrote. “We will update you all following the board meeting tomorrow with any changes regarding school procedures.
“Thank you for your and care. We are grateful for the continued dedication to safety from our SROs and staff.”
