LIST: Local schools close, dismiss early amid winter weather
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Check out which CSRA schools have changed schedules due to the winter weather conditions on Friday.
As the CSRA braces for potential severe ice and snow, some school districts have started to move to a virtual learning day.
Others, including the Richmond County School System, will be holding classes but releasing students early.
Richmond County
Out of an abundance of caution, all field trips, after-school activities and the district spelling bee will be postponed. School buildings will open early to accommodate students who may arrive before their scheduled start times.
Here’s the early dismissal schedule:

Other districts
- Aiken County Public School District officials announced schools and offices will be closed today, Friday, due to weather.
- Aiken Technical College will move to remote operations for the remainder of the school day on Friday.
- University of South Carolina Aiken will transition to remote operations effective 9 a.m. Friday. In-person events scheduled through noon tomorrow, Jan. 11, have been postponed.
- Allendale County School District will be canceling all athletic events and afterschool programs on Friday. Please note that we will still have normal school hours tomorrow.
- Augusta Technical College locations will be closed on Friday. Advising, registration and tuition/fee payment assistance will still be available virtually. The college plans to reopen on Saturday for scheduled new student orientations.
- Augusta University has canceled all in-person classes and activities for Friday. Online classes will continue as scheduled.
- Bamberg County School District will dismiss at 11:30 a.m. on Friday. All athletic events scheduled for Friday evening have been rescheduled for a later date. Please note that if weather conditions worsen sooner than expected, these plans may change.
- Barnwell County School District will have no changes to regular school operations; however, all activities after school have been canceled or rescheduled.
- Briarwood Academy in Warrenton will be closed on Friday.
- The Burke County Public School System will be open and operating on regular schedule Friday.
- Columbia County School District says schools will dismiss early on Friday. Elementary schools will dismiss at 11:25 a.m.; middle schools will dismiss at 10:30 a.m. and high schools will dismiss at 10:35 a.m. grab-and-go lunches will be available for students before departing from school. Normal operations will resume on Monday.
- Edgefield County School District says school will move to an e-Learning day on Friday, which means there will be no bus schedules and no on-campus instruction.
- Emanuel County Schools will be in normal session on Friday. Please note that some buses may be delayed due to weather-related road conditions.
- Georgia Military College will be closed on Friday. This includes Main Campus, Prep School and all Junior College satellite locations across the state. Campus operations and classes are scheduled to resume as normal on Monday.
- Glascock County School System and Family Connections and Communities in Schools after-school program will be closed on Friday. They plan to reopen on Monday.
- Hancock County Schools say they will have an asynchronous work-from-home day on Friday. Students will receive assignments from their teachers on Thursday to complete at home and each student will also receive a bagged lunch on Thursday that includes breakfast and lunch items to ensure they have meals while at home.
- Heritage Academy campus will be closed on Friday due to the weather.
- Jefferson County Schools will be closed on Friday.
- Lincoln County Schools say all schools will be closed on Friday due to potentially hazardous winter weather conditions.
- McCormick County School District says Friday will be an e-learning day for all students, which means students will access lessons via their Google Classroom. Thursday is still a regular school day and the district asks that all students bring home their Chromebooks and chargers at the end of the school day on Thursday in preparation for the e-learning day on Friday.
- McDuffie County School System will enact a “Learn from home day” on Friday. Students will receive instructions for their assignments prior to leaving school today.
- Orangeburg County School District students and staff will have an early release day on Friday to ensure everyone can be off the roadways ahead of predicted winter weather. Dismissal times are as follows: elementary schools (kindergarten through fifth grade): 11:30 a.m. Exception: Dover Elementary will dismiss at 12:30 p.m.; middle schools, K-12 schools, and middle high schools: 12:30 p.m.; high schools: 1 p.m. (expect Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School at 1:30 p.m.)
- SAIL Charter School in Evans will be closed Friday. Scholars will have a day of online learning.
- Saluda County School District says due to the potential weather, schools will have an e-learning day on Friday. Additionally, all after-school activities have been canceled.
- Taliaferro County School District announced school will be a virtual/asynchronous day on Friday.
- Tall Pines STEM Academy will be closed on Friday. It will be an e-learning day.
- Warren County Schools will close Friday, due to inclement weather conditions.
- Washington County Public School District will shift to an at-home learning model for Friday. Students will have at-home assignments to complete. All extracurricular activities are also canceled Friday through the weekend.
- Wilkes County School officials announced due to the winter weather advisory, schools will have a virtual learning day for Friday. Students should to Google Classroom to access their assignments.

Crews prepare highways as Georgia, South Carolina brace for winter storm
Before the weather system’s arrival, crews will apply a brine solution to interstates, state routes, bridges and overes in anticipation of freezing rain, sleet, ice, and snow.

Schools are also canceling after-school games and activities as they monitor weather conditions.
- Aiken County Public School District says all after-school activities (games, events, QuestZone) will be canceled from Friday after school until Saturday afternoon.
- Bamberg-Ehrhardt vs. Barnwell has been rescheduled for Thursday.
- Burke County Public School System says all after-school activities scheduled for Friday are canceled. All Burke Co. High School Basketball games scheduled for Friday have been rescheduled for Saturday, JV Boys: 3:30 p.m.; Varsity Girls: 5 p.m.; Varsity Boys: 6:30 p.m.; All games will be played at BCHS.
- Calhoun County vs Blackville-Hilda has been rescheduled for Thursday.
- Columbia County School System announced all after-school activities and events will be canceled on Friday.
- Edgefield County: Kickoff for the Boarder Bowl XII has been moved to 2 p.m. on Saturday
- Glascock County vs. Hancock Central has been rescheduled for Thursday.
- Horse Creek Academy says the varsity girls’ and boys’ basketball games against Wagener-Salley that were scheduled for Friday night have been rescheduled for Thursday night.
- McCormick County schools say the JV and varsity basketball games that were scheduled for Friday will now be played on Thursday, starting with the JV game. The JV and Varsity games will be played in the McCormick Middle School gym, and the middle school games will be played in the McCormick High School gym, starting at 5 p.m.
- Screven County’s Friday night basketball games start times have changed: Girls start at 4 p.m. and boys at 5:30 p.m. Saturday’s basketball game vs Burke Co. has been moved to Saturday, Jan. 18., at home, girls start at 3:00 p.m. and boys start at 4:30 p.m.
- Williston-Elko High School says the JV and varsity basketball games have been moved to Thursday, starting at 5 p.m.
OTHER CLOSURES:
- Aiken County Best Friend Express Transit System buses will not operate Friday due to Winter Storm Cora and potential icy road conditions.
- All non-essential Aiken County offices and collection centers will be closing today at 10:15 a.m. Please plan accordingly. For the latest updates, visit the official Aiken County website or follow our social media channels.
- Augusta Government officials announced all government offices will close at noon. Normal operations will resume on Monday. Residents are encouraged to limit travel due to potentially hazardous road conditions. If travel is necessary, please drive with extreme caution. View the attached release for a list of office/service closing and additional information.
- Augusta Parks & Recreation officials say due to inclement weather, all facilities will be closed today, including: Community Centers, istrative Office, Rental Office, Athletic Offices, Newman Tennis Center, Aquatic Center, Henry Brigham Swim Center.
- Columbia County offices will close at noon Friday. The affected offices include: Board of Commissioners, Tax Commissioner, Columbia County Sheriff’s istration, Clerk of Court, All Courts and District Attorney’s Office. In addition to the closure of county offices, all Columbia County Libraries, including Evans Library, Grovetown Library, and Harlem Library, will also close at noon today.
- Glasscock County Offices will close Friday due to the threat of inclement weather.
- Lincoln County Government officials say all offices are closed on Friday at 9:30 a.m. due to the winter weather.
- Riverview Park Activities Center will close at 5 p.m. on Friday. Kinderhooper Basketball games scheduled for Friday evening are canceled and will be rescheduled. The Activities Center will delay opening on Saturday until 8:30 a.m. All youth basketball games for Saturday will be played as scheduled.
