AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - FEMA’s disaster recovery centers in Emanuel, Jefferson, McDuffie, Richmond, Screven and Wilkes counties will be closed Friday and Saturday because of the winter weather.

This happens a day after they closed Thursday for a national day of mourning in observation of Jimmy Carter’s death.

At the request of the state government, centers in South Carolina remained open Thursday for residents affected by Hurricane Helene who are seeking assistance.

South Carolina residents have a little less time to seek help than those in Georgia.

The deadline to apply is Jan. 28 in South Carolina, but Georgians have until Feb. 7.
