Suspect turns himself in after Waynesboro slaying

WAYNESBORO, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A suspect willingly turned himself in and has been charged in connection to the first homicide of the year in Waynesboro, according to authorities.

Julian Bright, of Waynesboro, willingly turned himself in to the Waynesboro Police Department on Sunday night.

Arrest warrants have been signed for Bright for murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, authorities said on Tuesday.

Police arrest suspect in Grovetown apartment complex shooting

A suspect has been arrested in connection to an apartment complex shooting in Grovetown, officials announced Wednesday morning.

Earlier that day, authorities told us Bright, who was initially wanted for questioning about the incident, became a person of interest in the case.

The victim’s mother was cleared from being a suspect in the fatal shooting, according to police.

The Waynesboro Police Department received a call reporting shots fired near the mailboxes at Magnolia Acres on Sunday around 4:20 a.m., authorities say.

Officers say they arrived at the scene but were unable to locate any evidence of gunfire in that area.

A second call was received at 4:40 a.m., indicating someone had suffered a gunshot wound in one of the apartment units.

Waynesboro Police Department officers say they found the victim, Raynard Ellison, inside Apt. 47 with a gunshot wound to the chest, unresponsive.

Burke County Sheriff’s Office arrived on the scene and began R until emergency medical crews arrived, authorities say.

Ellison was transported to Burke Health where he was pronounced deceased at 5:42 a.m., according to authorities.

Since mid-April, there’s been a wave of homicides and other sweeping the CSRA. Although as the largest city, Augusta has been hit especially hard, the crime wave is affecting places large and small.

Our commitment to ensuring the safety of our community remains steadfast as we work diligently to uncover the circumstances surrounding this loss,” said Sheriff Alfonzo Williams. “We urge anyone with information to come forward and assist us in our investigation.”

The Burke County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division Team was also called to the scene.
