Monument honoring Black caddies installed ahead of debut
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A 20-foot long, 7-thousand-pound golf tee is now installed in the Sand Hills Historic District.
The sculpture pays homage to the black caddies throughout history like Pappy Stokes and Carl Jackson – who were both caddies for Masters champions.
The project was first announced in 2020 and was created by Ed Durant and Baruti Tucker.
We got a closer look at the monument back in November when we checked in on its progress.
Local Walgreens store says it’s closing permanently
As Walgreens struggles to make a comeback, it's planning to close around 1,200 locations – and at least one of them is here.

The people behind this project say it’s a way to highlight the caddie profession, which was not always as celebrated as it is today.
The idea of what the monument would look like changed throughout the years, but the location always remained the same: the neighborhood adjacent to the Augusta Country Club.
“What is next for the project is landscaping, also the aesthetics, making a buffer for safety and we also hope to have described bricks that will also honor additional people who were involved in African American golf heritage,” said Joyce Law, committee chair for the Master Champion Caddie Project.
The monument will remain covered until its unveiling. There is no word yet on when that will be
