AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Shocking video – showing the moments a gun slips out of a student’s pants during a fight at Butler High School on Tuesday.

A letter sent home to parents says a “weapon” dropped to the floor, but in the video, it’s clearly a firearm.

Now, parents and students are once again raising questions as to why there are no metal detectors in our public schools.

Concerned, worried, stressed and frustrated are just only a few of the emotions some parents are feeling – especially since this isn’t the first time this has happened.

One parent wonders what would have happened if a student hadn’t gone against the school system’s cell phone policy to record the fight.

Something every parent never thought they would always have on their mind.

“Nobody wants to keep sending their child to school and have to worry about if they’re going to make it home ok,” said Jalisa Johnson, a parent.

A video circulating on Facebook claiming to be filmed in Butler High School shows two people fighting in a classroom during class when what appears to be a gun falls onto the ground.

In a letter sent to Butler High School families, they say “During the altercation, students saw a weapon drop to the floor,” and “s and Richmond County School System Police responded immediately.”

The letter also states that they were securing the school for 45 minutes while police investigated and that the student was taken into custody.

“I just feel like as a parent, we should be able to send our kids to school and trust that they’re going to be safe,” said Johnson.

This isn’t the first time it has happened in the school district either. So, parents are demanding action – calling for extra safety precautions like metal detectors

“They shouldn’t be telling us ‘Mom, I’m scared,’ or, ‘I don’t want to be at school today,’ There are so many other reasons that they already don’t want to be in school for, their safety shouldn’t be one of them.”

Hoping for a change soon, so that there isn’t a next time that’s much worse.

“I just feel like how many times does it have to happen before you guys are actually going to take action and put different rules in place, different safety measures,” said Johnson. “The reason I’m speaking out about this is that I’m not going to be that parent that allows five or six different red flags to happen, and then now the serious situation has taken place and I’m at the school trying to figure out if one of my children is identified as someone who is no longer alive. I’m not waiting until that happens. So for me, I’m pissed off because I want to know what are you guys going to do.”

If you have safety concerns you can report them to the school or their safety tip line at 706-828-1077.

We reached out to the school district, asking if any extra precautions will be in place due to this incident and if they are still considering putting metal detectors in their schools.

We are still waiting for a response.
