AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Crews have repaired a gasoline pipeline that supplies the CSRA after it sprung a leak in the Atlanta area earlier this week.

One of the Colonial Pipeline’s main lines suffered a gasoline leak earlier this week in Paulding County, and the company had hoped to get it repaired by Friday.

The company reached that goal.

Gas prices rise, but Ga. and S.C. are below the national average

Prices at the gas pump continue to creep upward as sanctions continue to limit the worldwide oil supply.

“Colonial Pipeline safely completed repairs Friday morning on our gasoline pipeline, Line 1, in Paulding County, Ga., and returned the line to service,” the company said in s statement Friday afternoon. “Site work, including remediation in coordination with state and local agencies, will continue.”

The 5,500-mile Colonial Pipeline is a huge conduit for gasoline along the East Coast – and an offshoot of it runs through North Augusta.

The North Augusta stretch had been shut down, too, because it gets fuel from Line 1.

A shutdown of the pipeline a few years ago set off a wave of panic buying at gas stations that created long lines at gas stations, even though there was still plenty of gas for everyone. On the heels of the gas lines after Helene and ahead of possible snowfall next week, there was concern that could happen again.

Colonial Pipeline said it expects Line 1, which transports about 1.5 million barrels a day, to be down through Friday. Crews continue to work at the site of the leak.

“As we manage conditions on site to ensure a safe and responsible response, in coordination with relevant agencies, we will provide updates to our shippers regarding the expected timing of a return of service,” said David Conti, senior manager of communications for the company. “We are working with customers on a plan to provide limited gasoline receipts and deliveries on certain segments of our system. We will provide further updates as information becomes available.”

Local Walgreens store says it’s closing permanently

As Walgreens struggles to make a comeback, it's planning to close around 1,200 locations – and at least one of them is here.

The Colonial Pipeline is the United States’ largest pipeline for refined products, stretching more than 5,500 miles between Houston and New Jersey. It transports more than 100 million gallons of fuel each day.

Most people probably never heard of the pipeline before 2021, when it was shut down by hackers, leading to long lines to buy gasoline up and down the East Coat.

The pipeline provides nearly half the gasoline and diesel fuel consumed by the East Coast.

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy and one of the nation’s most-quoted experts on gasoline, had said the shutdown probably wouldn’t cause much of a supply problem unless it dragged on.

De Haan says about 90% of the gas station outages during the 2021 Colonial Pipeline shutdown were caused by panic-buying, not the pipeline disruption itself.

“The Colonial Pipeline being shut for a leak is not the story that is concerning. It’s seeing/hearing people want to overwhelm adequate supply because they think there’s a problem,” he said earlier this week. “They’ll end up creating a problem.”
