MORELAND, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - The Coweta County community is mourning the loss of one of its fire chiefs to what they are calling a “senseless tragedy.”

Coweta County Fire Rescue says Battalion Chief Bart Cauthen, 54, of Moreland, was killed Sunday night in Chambers County, Alabama while helping a driver.

A woman was killed in an early morning shooting at a motel on Monday, according to Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the Chambers County Alabama Sheriff’s Office, the early investigation indicates Cauthen was attempting to assist a driver who had struck a deer while traveling on County Road 267. A resident who lives in the area - identified as William Randall Franklin - opened fire on Cauthen and the individual who struck the deer, authorities said.

Off-duty Atlanta officer stabbed after hit-and-run, Rockdale deputies say

A metro Atlanta police officer was hospitalized after being stabbed Saturday, according to the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office says Cauthen, the driver he was assisting, and Franklin were all injured during a shoot-out. Chief Cauthen died from his injuries at the scene. The other two were airlifted to nearby trauma centers.

Authorities say arrest warrants for murder have been issued for Franklin. He will be arrested upon release from Piedmont Medical Center.
