ATLANTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A second commercial case of avian influenza, or the “bird flu,” has been confirmed in northeast Georgia, according to the Georgia Department of Agriculture.

The disease was found in a commercial flock in Elbert County on Wednesday, the department said. That’s the same county the first case was found in last Friday.

State officials have suspended live bird sales at the market and other gatherings, like shows and swaps.

“This is a serious threat to Georgia’s #1 industry and the livelihoods of thousands of Georgians who make their living in our state’s poultry industry,” Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tyler Harper said in a previous statement. “We are working around the clock to mitigate any further spread of the disease and ensure that normal poultry activities in Georgia can resume as quickly as possible.”

Officials also found the bird flu in Clayton County in a backyard-based, non-commercial flock.

While the bird flu is deadly to chickens, the risk of human infection is low, the Georgia Department of Agriculture said.
