AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - The Georgia Department of Transportation will continue clearing highways in the region, although much of the ice from Tuesday’s snowstorm is gone.

Above-freezing temperatures, combined with plowing and salting, have helped more routes dry. However, a few icy spots remain in some locations.

Maintenance crews will continue plowing and salting roadways, working through the night in the Milledgeville, Dublin and Louisville areas.

With temperatures expected to fall below freezing overnight, black ice could form in some locations.

Winter weather brings early releases, school closures in CSRA

School districts across the CSRA have announced plans for Wednesday due to winter weather. Here's what we know.

Any locations that are wet now could freeze overnight.

Additionally, even if the road is dry now, snow and ice on the shoulder or side of the road could melt onto the travel lanes, and that water could freeze.

If the road looks wet, assume it’s icy and proceed accordingly.

ROAD CLOSURES AND PROBLEM SPOTS

Richmond County

All roads in Richmond County with the exception of John C. Calhoun have re-opened. We expect the Calhoun Expressway to open Friday.

There are some roadways with patches of ice, especially those that have shaded areas so please continue to use caution.

On Ft. Eisenhower, Lane Avenue remains closed from 15th Street to 19th Street due to slippery conditions. All other roads on the installation have reopened.

Burke County

Of the eight reported accidents, seven were related to winter conditions. Fortunately, none of the incidents involved injuries: five single-vehicle accidents and two two-vehicle accidents.

Screven County

Officials have received several reports of icy spots throughout the county. We will do our best to add to this list as we are advised.

  • Rocky Ford Road
  • Ogeechee Road
  • Old Rocky Ford Road
  • Millen Highway at Indian Trail
  • Poor Robin Road
  • Spots on Robbins Branch off of Halcyondale
  • McDonald Church Road
  • Brannen’s Bridge at Peeples Farm and Buck Creek Road
  • Buttermilk Road has some spots

Washington County

Deputies and Rescue Workers are responding to an overturned vehicle crash on Fall Line Freeway near Chickasaw Road. Please use caution when approaching this area.

Deputies are investigating two ice related traffic accidents on Tennille Oconee Road in the area of Sessions Road.

Please if you are finding it necessary to be on the roadway, slow down and drive below the speed limits. These icy conditions are very hard to see and can be most difficult to drive upon.

How we got here

The ice Wednesday morning came as a surprise to many, leading to car accidents and warnings from officials to stay home.

With help from sunny conditions, above-freezing temperatures and a hot brine mixture, routes were drying faster than previously anticipated, officials said.

Crews treated the roads Wednesday with a concoction of salt and water to melt the ice, with calcium added to chemically heat up the mixture, speeding the process.

On the other side of the river, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said if you don’t need to drive, feel free to stay home.

“If you must travel, we ask that you stay on main roadways. Our South Carolina Department of Transportation has been doing an outstanding job for the past few days treating as many roads as possible. Is every road in South Carolina going to be treated? Probably not,” l. Nick Pye said.
