2 retired lawmen mourned in Richmond, Orangeburg counties
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Law enforcement agencies in Richmond and Orangeburg counties are mourning the separate deaths of two longtime deputies.
Richmond County

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office announced the ing of retired Maj. John “Jack” Francisco.
Francisco dedicated 45 years of his life to serving and protecting the citizens of Augusta-Richmond County. He began his career with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office in 1978 and retired as a major on May 31, 2023.
“Francisco was not only a loyal and dedicated public servant but also a symbol of courage and resilience,” the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. “In 1982, as Deputy Jack Francisco, he responded to a domestic dispute and was injured when he was shot in the stomach, in the line of duty. Tragically, his father, Capt. John Louis Francisco Sr., who responded as backup, was also shot and succumbed to his injuries 13 days later. Despite this unimaginable loss, Deputy Francisco continued to serve with unwavering commitment for 41 more years, leaving an indelible mark on our community.”
Sheriff Gino Brantley shared these words:
“Maj. Jack Francisco was the embodiment of selfless service and courage. His dedication to this community, even in the face of personal tragedy, is a testament to his character and love for Augusta. We are deeply saddened by his ing but forever grateful for his legacy and sacrifice. He will be missed by all who had the privilege to know and work alongside him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this time.”
Francisco’s unwavering commitment to serving and protecting our community will never be forgotten, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office said. “Please us in keeping his family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
Orangeburg County

Sheriff Leroy Ravenell and the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office are mourning the ing of a retired longtime deputy.
Sheriff Ravenell announced that retired deputy Bobby Jones ed away Jan. 19 at the age of 67 after an extended illness.
“There wasn’t a time when you saw Bobby that he wouldn’t have a smile on his face,” Ravenell said. “That was just who he was - good days, bad days, he kept going with a smile.”
Jones ed the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office in September 2008, serving in different roles until his retirement in February 2021.
Services for the deputy were held Saturday at Greater St. Peter AME Church, in Cameron, S.C.
