S.C. lawmakers consider new social media usage rules
SOUTH CAROLINA (WTOC) - South Carolina lawmakers are considering new rules for social media use.
The South Carolina Social Media Regulation Act would require social media companies to the ages of s and get parental consent before minors create s.
It would also limit how much personal information platforms can collect from minors and restrict targeted ads based on that data – though there would be some exceptions.

The bill would also prevent adults from messaging minors unless they are already connected. And parents would have access to their child’s settings, including privacy controls, screen time limits, and interaction lists.
“We’re aware of the fact there’s a similar bill, has been filed in the Senate,” said Representative Travis Moore, Spartanburg County. “We’re also aware of the various different legal issues facing similar laws in other states. And those are just a short list of reasons and considerations why we should be very deliberate in anything we do here.”
If ed, the Attorney General would be responsible for enforcement and people could sue companies who violate the law.
