Couple’s car totaled when ice falls from Georgia bridge
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - A couple on a work trip in Georgia said their weekend plans were ruined before they could even check into their hotel after their car was destroyed by ice that fell into traffic.
Hahn Tran said she and her husband were visiting Savannah when the terrifying moment took place.
“We are five minutes from the hotel, and out of nowhere, it was just like ... a bomb went off,” she said. “It could have killed us.”
Augusta flights canceled after plane crash near D.C.
Flights connecting to Augusta Regional Airport have been canceled after an American Airlines jet collided with an Army helicopter while landing at Ronald Reagan National Airport.

Camera video recorded by their Tesla shows the exact moment when the ice fell nearly 185 feet from a bridge into oncoming traffic.
Unable to make sense of what happened the two did their best to patch up what they could and continue their weekend.
It did not all come together for them until after they reviewed the footage.
“What if… the ice that hit us wasn’t an act of God but instead from the snow plow,” Tran said.
Deadly flu season tightens its grip on South Carolina
As flu season continues, data from the Department of Public Health shows thousands of South Carolinians have been getting sick. But the worst activity is outside the CSRA.

She said they began to put the pieces together after someone staying at their hotel began talking about how they had been watching the plow push off snow and ice from the bridge all day.
“After watching it back… I had a pit in my stomach,” she said. “What if someone was walking.”
That scenario is not too far off. Dara Michelotti and Tate Trattner both live in apartments under the Talmadge Bridge.
Michelotti said people walk around under the bridge all the time. Trattner said the cold weather made the area more dangerous.
“Once the ice refroze, it was a nightmare,” Trattner said.
The two said the snow in Georgia was exciting to see at first but after about a day, it became more scary.
“It was wild to see how the city just shut down,” Trattner said.
Ga. homestead exemption law puts voters, leaders at odds
It must be frustrating for voters who in all but two CSRA counties voted in favor of a cap on property tax hikes, only to see local leaders try to get around it.

The Georgia Department of Transportation released a statement after seeing the citation caught on video.
“Snow and ice removal is an uncommon occurrence in the coastal region and our crews worked diligently during the recent winter storm to safely clear roads,” the statement reads. “The Department will review any claims made against the state for assumed vehicle damage during this time. Adhering to this process, we would encourage motorists with questions about claims to the department at (912) 427-5700. During State of Emergency declarations, motorists are urged to limit travel while Georgia DOT and local crews work to treat and clear roadways.”
