First look at News 12′s February First Alert Space Special
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - News 12′s First Alert Weather team toured Deerlick Astronomy Village in Taliaferro County on Wednesday.
This is just a sneak peek of what will be a part of the First Alert Space Special that will air throughout the month of February.
We got an inside look at what makes the place so special.
“It’s amazing for people from the city. It doesn’t even have to be a big city. I have folks out from Thomson who are in the area and have never really seen the night sky because they have always lived in a city with light pollution. And when they come out to Deerlick, where we are fairly dark, and they look at it and they realize that they didn’t even know what the sky looked like,” said Erik Benner, founding member of Deerlick Astronomy Village.
Local church offers resource center to the community
Smiles, laughter and a good time is what you would have found at Beulah Grove Community Resource Center’s senior day.

Benner and the other founders spent time picking out the perfect place with minimal light pollution.
They protect their property with strict rules, like no white lights after dark. If a light is needed, red flashlights are used.
Vehicles are not permitted on the field after dark.
It is all to help minimize any light pollution so their and guests can have the best viewing experience.
