YEMASSEE, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - The CEO of a South Carolina primate research facility has blunt words for one of the animal rights organizations calling for the facility to be shut down.

In November, 43 rhesus macaques escaped from Alpha Genesis Primate Research Center in Yemassee after a staff member reportedly failed to secure doors behind her.

Last week, Alpha Genesis said the last of the monkeys were recovered and had been returned to the facility “safe and sound.”

It’s an elaborate scheme that investigators in several counties are trying to crack. Electronic devices, primarily Apple devices, go missing after being delivered to people’s doorsteps.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals issued a statement on Thursday challenging Alpha Genesis’ statement that all 43 monkeys have been safely recaptured. The organization is calling for the facility to release “proof of life” for the primates, saying they have doubts all the monkeys were recaptured.

Our sister station FOX Carolina reached out to Alpha Genesis for comment on the allegations. Here’s the response:

PETA is also seeking to have the recovered monkeys transferred to an accredited sanctuary. Below is the full statement from PETA:

PETA filed a 270-page federal complaint against Alpha Genesis in December containing hundreds of documents allegedly released by a whistleblower.

Alpha Genesis has previously stated it “is dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of animal care in a highly regulated industry, and our most recent USDA relicensing and inspection reports demonstrate that AGI maintains full compliance with the Animal Welfare Act.”
