AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Nearly 40,000 babies are born with heart defects in the U.S. each year.

Here at home, we have the Children’s Hospital of Georgia, ready and equipped with everything needed to treat these babies.

On this Miracle Monday and the beginning of American Heart Month, we are introducing you to a local family whose world was turned upside down when they found out there was a hole in their 6-year-old son Grayson’s heart.

“He’s definitely his own person,” said Mattew Moseley, Grayson’s dad. “Grayson is wild, spontaneous, highly intelligent, a great artist, picks up on everything and always willing to help others.”

Miracle Monday: Boy seizure-free, thanks to Children’s Hospital

A local 4-year-old boy is seizure-free after receiving care at the Children’s Hospital of Georgia. A place his parents are very familiar with after his dad had heart surgery there years ago.

Grayson is the sweetest little boy who was born with a congenital heart defect.

At a 20-week prenatal appointment, his parents Ashley and Matthew Moseley learned that their baby boy had a hole in his heart.

“I think I went through a depression because I thought I had done something wrong,” his parents said. “He’s the second born, so the same things I did with his sister I did with him and to find out that the heart didn’t develop like it should have scared us.”

Grayson was born at the Children’s Hospital of Georgia and immediately taken to the neonatal intensive care unit.

“It wasn’t until I think midnight I was able to go and look at him. I couldn’t even hold him at first for a few days, so that was rough,” said Ashley.

At six months old, Grayson had open heart surgery to repair the hole.

“At six months we didn’t know what to expect,” said Matthew. “A lot of emotions, a lot of understanding, and a lot of prayer as well.”

Grayson had about three other surgeries including being placed on a ventilator and trach which helps with breathing. He also was in and out of the hospital for different viruses and because of this, he spent a lot of time at the Children’s Hospital including holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas.

“They always went above and beyond to make sure that what we were going through and other families to make it as comfortable as possible to help ease the situation of what was going on,” said Matthew.

Grayson’s parents say they’re thankful for the Children’s Hospital and encourage other parents to always advocate for their child.

“Even though they prepared us a lot for what to expect, continue to ask questions, continue to advocate for your child, and build a village of the team of people that are going to help you,” said Ashley.

After all the surgeries, Grayson is doing great.

He now visits the Children’s Hospital annually for checkups.
