Richmond County jailer fired, arrested over use of force
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office says a jailer has been terminated and arrested for a use of force violation.
Officials say on Jan. 30, around 5:10 p.m., Jailer Omar Riley was involved in a use of force incident inside the Charles B. Webster Detention Center.
The incident occurred when an inmate using the phone was instructed by Riley to end his call. Officials say the inmate responded that he had two minutes remaining, at which point Riley drew and discharged his taser.

Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen says his office is investigating a suspicious death that happened in January.

Officials say this was in violation of policy and lawful use of force guidelines.
“Law enforcement is a demanding profession where every decision carries significant consequences, and we are entrusted with the responsibility of safeguarding lives and upholding the public’s trust,” the sheriff’s office said in a press release. “As emphasized in numerous day and night musters attended by Sheriff Brantley and his command staff, our commitment to the citizens of Richmond County and the ethical standards of our office must be upheld at all times.”
