Diamond Lakes ball fields renamed to honor former commissioner
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Diamond Lakes Regional Park baseball field was renamed on Wednesday to honor former Augusta Commissioner Andy Cheek.
It will now be known as the Fred Ancil “Andy” Cheek III Ball Fields.
The renaming ceremony was held at 11:30 a.m. at 4335 Windsor Spring Road, Diamond Lakes Regional Park.

Golf great Tiger Woods’ mother has ed away. He tweeted the sad news at 11:40 a.m. Tuesday.

Cheek served as Augusta-Richmond County commissioner of District 6 from 2000 to 2007. He died in 2023.
His brother spoke after Wednesday’s renaming ceremony.
“Andy worked hard, and he deserved it. I think a lot of times he felt like Augusta turned their back on him, but this is a great honor for him, and I want to thank Augusta, the people of Augusta, the commission, the mayor, the city, all of them for doing this,” said Randy Cheek.
City officials say Cheek was a dedicated advocate for youth sports and community development.
Augusta Riverwalk named after city’s first Black mayor
Augusta’s Riverfront is officially named after the city’s first Black mayor, Edward McIntyre.

“Andy Cheek believed in the power of sports to shape young lives,” said Tameka Allen, city . “His vision and leadership helped create opportunities for thousands of children to learn, grow, and thrive on and off the field. This renaming ensures his influence will be ed for generations to come.”
The newly named field will continue to serve as a hub for youth leagues, tournaments, and community events, according to city officials.
City officials say a commemorative plaque was be unveiled at the field.
