AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A program designed to get people in the construction industry is back in Augusta and it’s being offered to you at no cost.

Construction Ready is a non-profit organization helping people of all ages and backgrounds take advantage of job opportunities in the industry.

On Tuesday, they held their first information session where those interested could ask questions and learn more before g up.

Construction Ready partnered with Georgia Power, the Georgia Power Foundation, and Augusta Technical College to offer this 20-day program.

Students will learn both in and outside of the classroom with class ending with a hiring fair and graduation where students are matched with employers.

Georgia Power says construction jobs are in high demand right now and a lot of that is due to Hurricane Helene.

“We’ve got to continue to grow our workforce and specifically workforce participation,” said Kerry Bridges, region executive for Georgia Power’s east region. “Whether those folks are justice-impaired or at-risk this is a great way for folks that want to move directly into the workforce to up skill quickly, gain employment and ultimately move to independence.”

The Augusta District Attorney’s Office is also working to get people involved in the program.

“Our hope for you is that once you have this job it can deter from you potentially getting involved in activities that cause you to be involved in the criminal justice system in the first place,” said Kelli Spencer, assistant district attorney. “We want to keep people out of the courtroom and on jobs.”

Construction ready launched in Atlanta and over the years has expanded into other cities.

The program was offered in Augusta back in 2021.

We’re told there’s a 97% job placement after the program and 70% of participants are employed in the construction industry one year later.

One thing mentioned at Tuesday’s session was that the only thing you have to pay is attention.

You have to sign up by Feb. 27, before classes start in March.

No college degree is needed.
