EVANS, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A student has been criminally charged after an altercation with another student at Lakeside High School on Wednesday.

Preston Tymon Manigault, 18, was arrested on Wednesday, according to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.

In a letter sent home to parents, school officials say the altercation occurred in front of other students in the gymnasium, where one student was injured.

According to an arrest warrant, Manigault “intentionally made physical of an insulting a provoking nature resulting in substantial injury” to the victim.

The warrant states that Manigault did this by “striking him in the head with his fist numerous times, causing swelling to his face and head requiring hospitalization.”

Manigault is charged with one count of battery, according to the arrest warrant.

“The safety of students and staff is a top priority, and inappropriate physical of any nature is prohibited by law and the code of conduct. This behavior will not be tolerated at Lakeside High School,” said the letter.

On Thursday, a student landed in trouble Thursday at Evans High School after making comments and hand gestures of a threatening nature out loud during class, s said.

It was the second day in a row for a problem at a Columbia County School District high school.

“Safety of students and staff is a top priority and we take incidents such as these extremely seriously and will investigate fully,” parents were told. “Parents, please speak with your children about the seriousness of making comments, even in a joking manner, and the consequences that will follow.”
