ORANGEBURG, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - The FBI is warning Apple and Android s of a scam going on from state-to-state involving unpaid tolls.

Here are the warning signs of scams during tax season

Tax season is less than two weeks away and the IRS says there are some warning signs to keep in mind.

Tax form information

The FBI says that if you received a text saying you owe money for unpaid tolls, it’s probably a scam.

Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell announced that a new phone scam had moved into the area a couple of weeks ago.

“This scam comes to you in a text stating that you have unpaid toll fees,” the sheriff said. “I’ve received it and several others have also gotten a similar text.”

The Federal Trade Commission says scammers are pretending to be toll agencies and are sending texts demanding you pay immediately.

Deputies warn of phone scams impacting Augusta community

On Friday, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office issued a warning to the public regarding a phone scam targeting the Augusta community.

The FTC says the text might show you a dollar amount for how much you owe and will include a link for you to pay the fee, but you should not click the link and it is a phishing scam trying to steal your identity and obtain your bank info.

Officials say to avoid text scams you should not click on any links. Check the toll service’s actual website or customer service.

Report any suspicious text messages and then delete the text thread.

The FBI says since March 2024 they have received thousands of complains reporting smishing texts representing toll road collection agencies.

The text that people receive claim the recipient owes money for unpaid tolls and contain almost identical language.

The link provided in the text is to impersonate the state’s toll agency.
