ORANGEBURG, S.C. (WIS) - Studies show a shocking need for dementia resources in Orangeburg County.

Research from the Alzheimer’s Association ranked Orangeburg County as the eighth-highest county in the country for Alzheimer’s prevalence last year.

Now, a woman from Orangeburg County is ing the Association’s fight for more resources in rural communities.

An Orangeburg man has been identified after setting a woman on fire, according to the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office.

Roughly 1 in 50 people in Orangeburg County battle with either Alzheimer’s or some form of dementia.

Orangeburg County is a predominantly Black county and research shows the disease is 25% more likely among African Americans.

On the state level there’s been progress — In June, the S.C. General Assembly approved millions of dollars in the state budget for more regional dementia care specialists for the South Carolina Department on Aging.

Agents with the South Carolina Department of Corrections arrested an Orangeburg man accused of violating the of his conditional release under the state’s Youthful Offender Act.

Since then, the department said they now have two specialists and are in the process of hiring a third.

The Alzheimer’s Association said its focus is on educating people on how to prevent cognitive decline before it even happens.

They are now requesting $375,000 to fund preventative educational programs in Orangeburg County and surrounding rural counties.

Nearly 1,300 employees at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — roughly one-tenth of the agency’s workforce — are being forced out under the Trump istration’s move to get rid of all probationary employees.

CDC leaders say 24 million people have gone to their doctor with flu-like symptoms.

Advocates said things like exercise and diet are some of the building blocks to sustain healthy brain function. Until the funding is approved, advocates said they are normalizing the conversation around brain health.

“It really just starts locally as well,” said Kimaya Brown, a volunteer advocate with the Alzheimer’s Association. “You’d be surprised how many people I run into that have experienced the same issue with a loved one. It is a disease at the end of the day. Like heart complications, diabetes. Alzheimer’s is a disease and people need to be more aware of that.”
