WAYNESBORO, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -With numbers at animal shelters continuing to rise, a local animal shelter is working to ease the strain on its facilities.

Project Freedom Ride and the Old Fella Animal Rescue of Burke County teamed up to move 27 dogs out of a shelter.

It’s all in an effort to save as many animals as they can. With animals being surrendered left and right, they’re working with other organizations, some even out of state to help find a solution.

“Shelters are very crowded so this just kind of helps get dogs out so there’s more room for other dogs who can come into these kennels, which is really sad,” said Roman McConn, cofounder of Project Freedom Ride.

It’s practically been a never-ending problem, but they’re working to find a solution.

“Even just when we were waiting here this morning before we loaded up all the dogs, somebody tried to bring in and surrender their animals,” said McConn. “It’s just always people are just finding out they might not be a good fit for the dog, so we’re just trying to help out as much as we can.”

McConn, along with Old Fella, Burke County Animal Services and Burke County Animal Hospital are doing just that by helping transport dogs to states like Indiana and Ohio.

“It’s like trying to empty a bucket with a tablespoon,” said McConn. “It’s not very easy and it’s also raining at the same time, so it’s just getting as much out as you can one time.”

Now, 27 dogs are on the road and heading north to have another chance at finding their forever home.

“So instead of a tablespoon, it’s a little measuring cup today,” said McConn.
