McMaster nominates new lead of South Carolina’s military department

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - Gov. Henry McMaster announced Tuesday a nomination for the head of South Carolina’s Military Department.

Brig. Gen. Robin B. Stilwell was nominated to take over as the Adjutant General. Part of the responsibilities for the role is managing the Emergency Management Division, South Carolina’s Airmen and the National Guard.

According to a biography, Stilwell has more than 35 years of military experience. He is also a lawyer and a judge for the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit, which encomes Greenville and Pickens counties.

This position Stilwell was nominated for is the highest-ranking uniformed officer in South Carolina.

Stilwell will be replacing Maj. Gen. Van McCarty. During Tuesday’s press conference. McCarthy reflected on major events the National Guard has responded to during his tenure ― natural disasters, civil disturbances, the U.S. Border and Syria.

Stilwell still has to be confirmed by the South Carolina State Senate. He will appear before a committee responsible for confirming for him in the next few weeks.
