WASHINGTON - Postmaster General Louis DeJoy signaled on Tuesday that he plans to leave his role as the head of the U.S. Postal Service.

In a statement released Tuesday by the U.S. Postal Service, DeJoy asked the agency’s board of governors to begin looking for his successor.

Sen. Jon Ossoff, D-Ga., who’s been critical of the Postal Service, urges the board to exercise care in picking a successor.

“USPS leadership has failed Georgia for over a year, leading to abysmal on-time performance and hardship for families, businesses, seniors, and veterans. That’s why I’ve led aggressive oversight to demand better performance and prevent disastrous delays across our state,” he said.

“As the USPS Board of Governors begins its search for a replacement, I urge them to find new leadership that will swiftly restore normal service that Georgia families and businesses can rely on, and I will continue holding them able.”

Last month, Ossoff launched an inquiry with DeJoy demanding that USPS deliver prescriptions, medications, and VA appointment notices to Georgia veterans on time, after receiving reports from Georgians that they are receiving prescriptions late and appointment notices after their scheduled appointments.

Last year, Ossoff questioned DeJoy under oath during a U.S. Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing about the delays.

“The Governors greatly appreciate his enduring leadership and his tireless efforts to modernize the Postal Service and reverse decades of neglect,” Amber McReynolds, chairwoman of the Board of Governors, said in a statement.

DeJoy’s announcement comes as the Postal Service is in its fourth year of implementing his “Delivering for America” plan. The 10-year plan aimed to increase the Postal Service’s performance, reduce costs and improve the agency’s “financial stability.”

The plan called for higher postal rates, slower standard delivery and fewer post offices, according to CBS News. It sought to turn to profit in the 2024 fiscal year but instead reported two consecutive years of losses.
