Finding Solutions: New mailboxes aim to help Augusta’s homeless
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Augusta’s homeless task force is helping meet the needs of others through a vision that has become a reality.
The task force has now set up mailboxes for case managers to use for their clients who are unhoused.
Something like ing your child in school or getting a state ID all require an address, and this is where mailboxes come into play.
The task force is finding solutions in how they can give people a hand up.
Many fear Ga. bill could put more homeless people in jail
Georgia House Republicans advanced a bill to let property owners get compensated by local governments if they don’t enforce bans on homeless encampments.

They’re finding ways to remove barriers that stand in the way of getting people back on their feet.
“The whole goal of every nonprofit in the area is for people to be self-sufficient and hopefully grow their own beautiful wings and be able to fly. That’s the real goal of the task force,” said Nomi Stanton, chair of the Augusta homeless task force.
One way people will be able to become self-sufficient is through mailboxes.
Stanton says the idea to provide this came straight from those who will benefit from it.
Bill Beazley to help build tiny homes for former foster youths
A well-known local housing developer signs on to help build a tiny home village that will instill life skills in former foster youths.
“Being able to see a project we’ve been talking about and really listening to our clients, this is a huge win for the entire city,” said Stanton.
The mailboxes will be used for case managers working with clients who are unhoused and in need of an ID, medical exams, or even filling out job applications. Now, they have an address to write down.
“This is the perfect idea for them because when they are in their own home. We can have that mail forwarded right to them,” said Stanton.
Luke Niday with Augusta’s homeless task force says this really is a community effort and encourages others to help make a difference.

“We need our whole community to work together to bring to the table what you have, whatever gift, resource bring it to the table for the betterment of our city. Maybe it’s used for homelessness or something else, but all of us Augustans standing together to say we are for the betterment of our city,” said Niday.
Stanton said: “It’s beautiful to see things we talked about for years, actually happening and I would say we consider these kinds of wins like our Super Bowl.”
The official unveiling for the mailboxes is March 11 at 3 p.m.
The mailboxes are located in front of GAP Ministries on Greene Street.
