AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster and Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp have both been appointed to the Council of Governors by President Donald Trump.

The Council of Governors was first established in 2010 with Executive Order 13528 under former President Barack Obama’s istration. The bipartisan group is comprised of ten state governors, with no more than five from the same political party.

“Thank you, President Trump, for the opportunity to serve on the Council of Governors,” McMaster said in a statement. “I look forward to working with my fellow governors to strengthen disaster response and national security efforts for South Carolina and our country.”

The Council’s role is to strengthen state-federal partnerships on various matters ranging from homeland defense to civil .

The eight other governors Trump appointed include:

  • Governor Glenn Youngkin of Virginia
  • Governor Josh Stein of North Carolina
  • Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida
  • Governor Jeff Landry of Louisiana
  • Governor Wes Moore of Maryland
  • Governor Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan
  • Governor Kathy Hochul of New York
  • Governor Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania

Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin and North Carolina Governor Josh Stein were named Co-Chairs of the Council of Governors.

The governors will serve a two-year term. Kemp and McMaster’s appointments mark the first time a Georgia or a South Carolina governor has served on the council.

Despite former quarrels, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp November for his victory in the 2024 election.

The pair have since mended their relationship and even appeared together during a visit to Evans after Hurricane Helene in October last year.
