77-year-old dies in house fire on Five Chop Road in Santee

SANTEE, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office says a 77-year-old man has died after a house fire on Saturday.

The coroner’s office says Hubert Adams died in the fire.

The Orangeburg County Fire Department says at 4:13 a.m., the Orangeburg County Communications Center received a 911 call for a reported house fire on Five Chop Road.

While responding, local fire departments were updated that there was a report of someone trapped inside, according to officials.

The fire department says firefighters began working the fire in a large two-story home and confirmed the reports of someone trapped inside by other occupants of the home.

The fire department says the house contained a heavy fire and high heat conditions.

Crews removed one person from the home, later identified as Adams, who was then transferred to Orangeburg County EMS, according to fire officials.

The coroner’s office says Adams was pronounced dead on the scene.

An autopsy for Adams has been scheduled for Tuesday.

The fire department says it took two hours to place the fire under control.

Providence Fire Department, Bowman Fire Department, West Middle Fire Department, Four Holes Fire Department, Jamison Fire Department, Orangeburg Department of Public Safety, Orangeburg County Office of Emergency Services and Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office also assisted in the fire.

The South Carolina State Fire, Orangeburg County Fire investigators and South Carolina Law Enforcement Division agents are investigating the origin and cause of the fire.

The Red Cross was notified to assist the five displaced occupants of the home, according to fire officials.
