Delta flight headed to S.C. declares emergency, returns to Atlanta

A plane heading to Columbia from Atlanta was forced to return to Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport after engers saw ‘haze’ inside the aircraft.

ATLANTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A Delta Air Lines flight had to return to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Monday morning because of “haze” inside the cabin, the airline said.

Delta flight 876 was en route to Columbia, South Carolina, when an emergency was declared after takeoff at around 9 a.m., the airline said.

There were 94 customers, two pilots and three flight attendants on board the Boeing 717-200.

One customer was even from the Aiken area.

“Once they turned the plane around and we knew that the captain or the pilot had everything under control, and he knew what was going on and we were descending. I think that calmed a lot of people down,” said Aiken resident Alexis Rossi, who was on the flight.

They said slides were deployed after landing and Delta teams brought the engers back to the terminal by ground transportation.

“The flight crew followed procedures to return to Atlanta when a haze inside the aircraft was observed after departure,” the airline said in a statement. “Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and people and we apologize to our customers for the experience.”

The Federal Aviation istration (FAA) said they would be investigating the incident and mentioned “smoke” in the flightdeck.

On Saturday, a flight from Los Angeles International Airport headed to Sydney, Australia was forced to make an emergency landing after smoke was detected on board.
