GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (WMBF) – A South Carolina civil trial involving the man convicted of killing Brittanee Drexel is set to begin Monday.

The trial centers around a lawsuit filed by Drexel’s mother, Dawn Conley, in January 2023 against her daughter’s convicted killer, Raymond Moody.

Moody will be in court as proceedings begin, per a transportation order filed in Georgetown County. It also states the South Carolina Department of Corrections will provide Moody transportation to the county’s judicial center.

Drexel, who was originally from New York, vanished on April 25, 2009, while vacationing in Myrtle Beach.

Moody confessed to law enforcement that he had kidnapped, raped and killed Drexel and was sentenced to life in prison in October 2022.

Conley is suing Moody for intentional infliction of emotional distress/outrage.

The lawsuit states that Moody deprived Conley of the “ongoing love and affection that a child gives a parent” and intentionally caused her emotional distress.

“There is likely no greater sense of loss than that of a parent who has lost a child, such that the murder of a child is such extreme and outrageous conduct that it exceeds all bounds of decency,” the lawsuit states.

The documents go on to state that Drexel’s disappearance gained national attention and that Moody knew or should have known the effect his actions had on Conley.

The lawsuit states that Conley is entitled to actual damages, special damages, consequential damages and punitive damages due to medical bills she has incurred during the ordeal, along with loss of enjoyment of life, pain, suffering and mental anguish.

Conley demanded a jury trial in the case.

Meanwhile, Moody’s girlfriend, Angel Vause, was just recently sentenced for lying to the FBI about the case.

Conley has also publicly called for more charges to be brought against Vause related to her daughter’s death.
