Finding Solutions: Vet gets new roof, thanks to Hero Roofing
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Getting a new roof can come with a hefty price tag, and after Hurricane Helene, that’s a reality many people are facing across the CSRA.
For one company, they’re finding solutions in making sure our veterans are taken care of.
We were there on Friday, as one local vet received a free roof.
“I was just excited. I was pleased with it,” said James Bishop, Navy veteran. “I didn’t know we were even in the running. A guy came by and looked at the roof and didn’t say much to us, and then comes back and says ‘You won a roof, and we are going to re-roof your house for nothing.’”
Excitement and relief for Navy veteran Bishop and his wife.
Bishop served as a combat medic in Vietnam.
Their daughter took part in the company Hero Roofing’s veterans program and entered Bishop in to win a free roof.
Finding Solutions: Veterans’ Villa helping those who served
We first told you about the Avery house in 2018 when one woman made it her mission to purchase an Augusta home and turn it into transitional housing for veterans.
“I didn’t know how to react,” said Bishop. “I’ve never won anything, but we are doing alright now. God has been good to us.”
Nick Branon started Hero Roofing with his dad in 2018.
Neither has a military background, but both have a heart to give back.
“We wanted to kind of establish something more geared around the customer and taking care of our community,” said Branon. “Since then, we’ve hired a lot of veterans and we have sheriffs deputies working for us, and we care deeply about the ones who have protected our country.”
For the last four years, Hero Roofing has been providing free roofs to nominated veterans. They pick two winners around Veterans Day. Bishop is the first to win in the Augusta area.
“I love every one of them for doing this for us,” said Bishop. “It’s something to be proud of. I don’t consider myself a hero – the ones that didn’t come back are the heroes.”
Branon says they want to increase the number of vets they help as the business grows.
“We go out there and inspect it to make sure they are in need of a new roof and make sure insurance can’t help them, but if they can we can go that route, but we are looking for a veteran that financially needs that assistance and we will step in and help them,” said Branon.
Finding Solutions: Local gym helps those fighting neurological conditions
One local gym is empowering those fighting neurological conditions and helps to improve the quality of life through exercise.

Branon says the out-of-pocket cost for a roof like this would be around $15,000. An expense Bishop does not have to worry about.
“I’m just excited about having this, and it’s a good piece of money someone is putting out. I’m just waiting for someone to pay for the house,” said Bishop
Hero Roofing works with companies that supply the material, and then they do the rest at no cost to the veteran.
They hope to increase the number of vets they help each year to three or four. They actually only get about five to 10 nominations a year.
They are taking submissions right now. If you would like to nominate a vet, you can visit their website here.
