R&B singer Angie Stone dies at 63

(Gray News) - Singer Angie Stone, former member of the female hip-hop trio the Sequence, has died in a car crash.

She was 63.

Stone’s manager, Deborah Champagne, confirmed her death to WSFA. According to their report, she was killed in a crash early Saturday morning on Interstate 65 near Montgomery, Alabama. Variety reported a representative confirmed Stone was leaving a performance when the vehicle she was in overturned.

The representative reported that Stone’s band and backup singers were also in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Variety said other injuries were reported, but no further details were provided.

The Mobile-Area Mardi Gras Association confirmed Stone had just performed at their 2025 Grand Marshal’s Ball.

“Her talent captivated everyone in attendance, and her presence truly elevated the event,” Isadore B. Sims, president of the Mobile-Area Mardi Gras Association, said in a statement. “Never could we have imagined that it would be the last time we would have the honor of witnessing her perform.

Stone was reportedly traveling to Baltimore to perform at the CIAA basketball tournament.

Best known for her 2001 hit, “Wish I Didn’t Miss You,” Stone was nominated for three Grammys during her career. According to Variety, she was nominated for best R&B performance by a duo or group with vocals in 2003 and best female R&B performance in 2004.

Stone got her start at the age of 16 as part of the trail-blazing trio the Sequence. They were the first all-female hip-hop trio to be signed to Sugar Hill Records. Their most notable hit was their 1979 single “Funk You Up,” which has regularly been sampled in contemporary songs.

After the Sequence disbanded, Stone ed the group Vertical Hold before starting her solo career in the late 1990s with J Records.

Stone released her debut album “Black Diamond” in 1999. She would release 10 solo albums during her career including what is considered her breakthrough album, “Mahogany Soul,” and “Stone Love.”
