Edwards, Fulwiley lead South Carolina to SEC Championship with 93-75 win over Oklahoma
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - South Carolina is a win away from being SEC champions after taking down the Oklahoma Sooners 93-75 in the semifinals.
South Carolina began the game with a solid start, shooting 6-8 early.
Multiple turnovers from the Sooners helped create easy baskets for South Carolina. However, at the end of the first period, Oklahoma held firm after a few big runs by the Gamecocks.
South Carolina led 23-15 at the end of one.
In the second, Oklahoma and the Gamecocks struggled to convert baskets even with the frantic pace.
A blistering run for South Carolina gave the Gamecocks a 45-28 lead going into the second half. Turnovers doomed the Sooners, with their opposition scoring 17 points off giveaways alone.
South Carolina looked to continue their dominant run in the third. After Vanderbilt took advantage of the third in Friday’s game, back-to-back threes for Oklahoma brought the lead down to 15.
Two more threes from OU brought the lead down to 10.
Joyce Edwards, who led all scorers with 21 points Saturday afternoon, silenced the OU run with a tough and-one finish.
Edwards and MiLaysia Fulwiley were the difference in the game. Edwards' play inside forced Oklahoma star Raegan Beers into foul trouble, and Fulwiley made crucial plays on both sides of the ball to keep the Sooners at bay. The guard had a complete game, finishing with 19 points, 3 rebounds, and 5 assists with just two turnovers.
Beers, Oklahoma’s leading scorer, struggled to get it going. After scoring the first point, Beers failed to make another shot until the fourth quarter, finishing with 7 points on 2-10 shooting.
Oklahoma fought back hard, but a late run helped the Gamecocks maintain a 16-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.
South Carolina held off the Sooners' final push to advance to their sixth straight SEC championship, winning 93-75. South Carolina will play the winner of Texas/ LSU Sunday at 3 p.m.
