WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - Ben Delwiche is a math teacher by day, and a TikTok baking influencer with 1.3 million followers by night.

Delwiche said Pi Day is the perfect time to combine his ions.

“It’s all about math and this constant that tells us the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, and it’s all about baking.”

Ben is an example of an influencer using the educationally focused Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) feed. STEM is now default on the app for all U.S. s. The social media app launched it’s STEM feed two years ago today.

TikTok said nearly one in three teens uses the feed weekly. Influencer Gohar Khan views the app as a good platform for teaching.

“Short form content, and specifically working with TikTok allows me to reach students who would otherwise not be seeking this information on their own,” Khan said. “And so for me it’s a big point about accessibility, and also just increasing awareness about these important topics.”

Cake-making influencer Robert Lucas believes STEM content can make some school concepts less intimidating for students.

“I’m using math now that I never thought I would really do,” Lucas said. “I think it’s one of those things where you’re going to go through life, and any aspect of what you want to do as a creator or not, you’re actually doing these things that you didn’t even realize.”

Shannon Doherty said the app is not just for kids, but for parents like her, looking to share advice. She provided Pi Day content for her 2.1 million followers.

“I love teaching my kids how to discover and learn using math in their everyday lives. So I made a pizza pie party for them all about Pi Day, and they’re measuring their pizza’s and trying to figure out how to get the circumference of a pizza.

Tiktok said 10 million STEM-related videos have been posted globally in the past three years.
