CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (Gray News) - Firefighters in Tennessee helped deliver a baby on the side of the interstate while their family was stuck in standstill traffic.

The Chattanooga Fire Department reported the family was heading to the hospital with the mother in labor when they hit a traffic jam on Interstate 24. While stuck in the backup, the family realized the “baby had other plans” and they wouldn’t make it to the hospital in time.

The family pulled over and called 911.

The baby girl was born at about 1 a.m. Thursday, moments after first responders arrived at the scene.

The mother and her newborn were transported to the hospital while the father followed along.

“Everyone is happy, healthy and doing great,” the Fire Department said. “Congratulations to the family involved in this call and great job by first responders.”
