New bill takes aim at S.C. High School League

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - State House Bill 4163 is making its way through the statehouse with the goal of dissolving the South Carolina High School League.
The league serves as the governing body for high school athletics.
The current executive board of the SCHSL is made up of current athletic directors, coaches, and other of athletic governing bodies throughout the state.

If ed, the bill will replace the current league with the South Carolina High School Athletic Association. The new setup would not allow current coaches and athletic directors to serve on the 11-member board of directors.
Each position would be appointed staff chosen by of the General Assembly.
This is because the SCHSL recently ed amendments to its transfer rules. Current transfer rules require players who transfer to sit out a calendar year before being eligible to play a sport unless they fall into a list of exemptions that would be voted on by the SCHSL executive board.

The new rule, set to take effect next school year, gives students one transfer to another school without the need for a legitimate change of address to the new school’s attendance zone.
If a student transfers after their one transfer, they are ineligible for 30 days or half of the total number of games for that sporting season and could be deemed ineligible for the postseason.
