AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - This week marks six months since Hurricane Helene hit our area.

Even though the time has ed to apply for financial assistance through FEMA, it’s not too late to get help in other ways.

This week, case managers are holding events to connect with anyone who needs guidance throughout the recovery process.

It might’ve been six months now, but some families are still knee-deep in rebuilding.

We spoke to many people coming in and out of the doors on Tuesday, saying they are still suffering from loss in many ways from Hurricane Helene, but another form of help is here.

You come in, sit down and start by filling out these forms with a case manager.

“Well, you can look around and still see the storm. It must have cost thousands of dollars to just get the trash picked up,” said Carlos Brown, mobile intake attendee.

Brown has been looking for help for nearly six months.

“A lot of damage, a tree came down and cut my house in two, but I’m not discouraged because we lost a lot of life,” said Brown.

But there’s still help here for long-term disaster relief, and it could be financial, physical, or even emotional help.

Downtown businesses push for communication amid construction

Millions of dollars in improvements for downtown Augusta could negatively impact the businesses it’s trying to help.

“Home rebuilds, home repairs, or just simply in need of resources, meaning if they might have lost food, clothing, furniture,” said Dechancela Williams, disaster case manager.

You can get help regardless of whether you applied or were approved for FEMA assistance.

“They were definitely excited, now, well, some were confused because they had already tried through FEMA, and I said ‘No, this is on a different spectrum, this is through the state,’” said William Robinson Jr., Hayden Baptist Church pastor.

People are hopeful that getting help is still an option.

“This organization seems to have a lot of ways to go about fixing things. The man even said sometimes they can get people to come out and fix your house just to be nice. So I haven’t seen that, but I would like to see it,” said Brown.

If you missed Tuesday’s event, you can still visit Hayden Baptist Church on Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

If you do, make sure to bring proof of identification and social security numbers for everyone in your household.

FEMA officials are still available for you if you can’t make it this week.
