AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Augusta University’s College of Nursing is making an impact in the lives of those who may set aside their needs to focus on the needs of others.

We’re talking about grandparents — and to many children, they are the ones raising them.

That’s why AU is finding solutions in hosting health fairs specifically for these grandparents.

The Healthy Grandparents Program has been around since 1999, providing physical, emotional and social to grandparents raising their grandkids living in parent-absent homes.

March is colorectal cancer awareness month, and our local hospitals are starting the conversation.

On Thursday, a health fair was held where these caretakers could get screenings for weight, blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, vision and hearing. A day focused on them and their health.

Andrea Buggs has been a part of the program for five years.

“I wanted to the program because I needed all the help and resources I could use in raising my three grandchildren,” said Buggs. “As a parent, you think you know some things, you don’t know it all, so it helps to have from other grandparents and professionals to help you along the journey. You’re not alone.”

It’s one of two programs in Georgia that are grant-funded.

These grandparents work alongside a social worker who helps with health care and education needs, as well as legal custody petitions.

The good thing here is that if you are a grandparent raising your grandchild, you are not alone.

The Healthy Grandparents Program does have a monthly group.
