AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - Friday afternoon in Aiken, the sheriff’s office celebrated their newly expanded detention center with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

There will be more housing units and security features.

Sheriff Marty Sawyer said this can make it a more safe environment for the inmates.

“These people aren’t in here because they wanna be. Tensions were high with each other as far as inmates go, which makes tensions high with detention deputies. And you go back to two people per cell, it takes the tensions down. You won’t have as many fights or as many arguments and stuff like that,” said Sawyer.

He also says there’s a new vending machine, and washer machines for inmates with good behavior.
