NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - A new school is coming soon to North Augusta.

Fox Creek High School, a charter school near Murphy Village, is building a middle school.

It’s big news for parents in the area who are looking for alternatives to the public school system.

Especially for students who perform better with smaller class sizes and more one-on-one time with teachers.

Adding a middle school is something they’ve wanted to do for years.

It’s a new opportunity for young students in the CSRA, and will be right next door to the high school.

They’re one step closer.

North Augusta neighbors worry as ‘The Hive’ project continues

The Hive in North Augusta is now one step closer to being a reality. On Thursday, the city held a groundbreaking for the new development.

“The original school was off of exit 1, and we moved here in 2009,” said Josh Trahan, the executive director. “It wasn’t long after we were on this property at 64 acres that the conversation came up about adding a middle school.”

Now, years later, it’s official.

“I’m really excited as a mom because I know that we are going to choose wonderful teachers for Fox Creek Middle, and to have my children basically just across the parking lot will be wonderful,” said Megan Stafford, a parent and teacher.

Right now, it’s just a grass lot, but next year it’ll be a 57,000 square foot school holding 600 students.

There will also be a gym, a unique common space, art, band rooms and more.

“I think this is going to be wonderful to have this culture for middle school students,” said Stafford. I think that they need that. They need a safe place. They need a place that has their best interest at heart and really understands what middle schoolers need. So I think that’s what’s going to make a total difference with the school is that middle schoolers are going to be where they are and they’re going to have everything they need to thrive.”

And working to make the transition easier.

Could historic Augusta school become new senior living apartments?

Plans are underway for an affordable senior living apartment complex in the Sand Hills neighborhood. The site is the historic Weed School on Mount Auburn Street.

“This will give us that chance to connect with those young people at the middle school level before they come up to us at the high school level,” said Trahan.

And benefiting the community.

“Definitely going to add jobs to the community, which is always big,” said Trahan. I mean, we’re looking at fully staffed and probably have 50 ish employees.”

But most of all, benefiting the students.

“We have wonderful middle schools in the area, but I think having a choice is wonderful for parents as well,” said Stafford.

According to the school’s website, the new school will serve students in grades 6 through 8.

The website states the school “provides a strong foundation in academics and extracurriculars that will seamlessly bridge the gap to our high school.”
