AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - More than 500 people stepped outside to enjoy the beautiful Friday weather and compete in the Special Olympics games covering Aiken, Edgefield, and Saluda counties.

From the opening parade to the dance breaks, and the thrill of going for gold, the area 15 Special Olympics athletes walk away with more than a win.

“What I expect and what I think they would take away is just great friendships, a really great experience, and a big gigantic smile and happiness when they get back on the buses,” Amy Ingram, director for Special Olympics South Carolina area 15.

It’s about racing to the finish line.

“They’re running, they’re throwing balls, they’re doing just anything you can imagine,” said Ginger Glass, parent.

Knowing your differences is what makes you stronger.

“I enjoy the Special Olympics because It takes me a part of being who I am instead of just having ability. It’s not a disability. It’s our ability. Because whatever you can do, you can put your Mind to,” said Lashay Valentine, athlete for Special Olympics South Carolina area 15.

Through games of baseball, track and field, and more, nearly 500 athletes take on the challenge every year.

“I learned about how we still get to participate even if we don’t win, we still have to be brave and try to win,” said Valentine.

Showing what it means to be an achiever and an overcomer.
