14-year-old arrested for making terroristic threats

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office responded on Thursday evening to Heritage Academy, located at 326 Greene Street, about a report that a 14-year-old juvenile student had made a threat.

During a classroom incident, the student became upset and made a statement threatening to “shoot the school up.”

The Criminal Investigation Division immediately launched an investigation.

The juvenile was interviewed and itted to making the remark.

As a result, the student was arrested and committed to the Regional Youth Detention Center on the charge of Terroristic Threats and Acts.

Sheriff Eugene Brantley said, “This is the second such incident within a week, and in both cases, our Criminal Investigators worked diligently to ensure those responsible were arrested. Threats of this nature, whether made on social media, by telephone, or in person, will be taken seriously, and appropriate felony charges will be pursued,” Sheriff Eugene Brantley said. Our schools should be a safe haven for our most valuable resources, our children and future leaders. The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to doing everything within our power to protect our children and ensure their safety.”

We encourage parents and guardians to have open conversations with their children about the seriousness of making threats and the consequences that follow.

Any suspicious or threatening behavior should be reported immediately to school officials or law enforcement.
