12 On Your Side Investigates: Missed military moving deadline
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - After a 12 on your side investigation exposed problems with the new company in charge of military moves, two U.S. senators got involved.
Our reporting sparked a lot of questions, and the feds missed their deadline for answers.
Senators Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock sent a letter to General Randall Reed, head of the U.S. Transportation Command.
In that letter, they discussed problems with HomeSafe Alliance that 12 On Your Side Investigates has been highlighting for a couple of months.
12 ON YOUR SIDE INVESTIGATIONS:
- U.S. senators launch inquiry into military moving contract
- Movers say they can’t afford to take part in new program
- Military pulls back on relocation program
- Families hit roadblocks with new military moving contract
Military familes tell us they’ve experienced problems like delays, poor communication and missed pick-ups in the new program.
We first broke this story back on March 12, the day this letter, an official inquiry, is dated.
The senators are asking General Reed four questions that all, essentially, hold HomeSafe Alliance able.
They said they wanted answers by March 31st.
March 31 was Monday.
General Reed did not make that deadline.
On Tuesday, a spokesperson at U.S. Transcom told 12 On Your Side Investigates a response was being worked, but he needed to check on the status.
The cost of the American dream at the price of a peach
The survival of Titan Farm's American dream is dependent on laborers. Labor it can only find through the H2A program.
In the meantime, he suggested we look to the House Armed Services Committee, where last week, a member of Congress asked General Reed about these problems.
General Reed said there is now a system in place during this transition where the Department of Defense, the movers, and the family can follow along to see what is and isn’t happening with their move.
“So, while there are performance issues, and while things in spots are not as solid as we would like them, at least now we can see them, and at least now we can hold the conversation,” said Genral Reed. “At least now we can document it, and at least now we have incentive to get the performance that we’re seeking.”
Again, TRANSCOM did not give us an estimate of when Senators Ossoff and Warnock can expect a response.
We’ll let you know as soon as we hear they receive one.
